Default new outboard - Any suggestions?

Well the old Mercury 40hp 2cycle wouldnt start again today, oh I'm sure is has something to do with the gas / oil saga even tho I have been using non ethanol and fuel stabilizer. just kinda tired of it all. When I go to the boat it should start!

Anyways, time to start thinking about a new 4stroke. Any models and dealers in north alabama ( gadsden /birmingham/guntersville ) that anyone has had a good experience with?

    Thanks.....

I recently bought a 20HP Tohatsu and it has remarkably advanced technology. Tohatsu makes the Mercury motors up to around 60HP. Like you, when I get to go, I want the motor to start.
The 20 has fuel injection and the ignition and fuel are computer controlled just like today's cars. It starts and runs like a dream compared to the balky 2strokes I've always had. I would expect the same performance from any of the new Tohatsu/Mercury motors.

I see a bunch of Yamahas around here, but I been looking at Honda and Suzuki too, hopefully I can make a decision without much over analysis.

I have a 70’s model Johnson 20hp on the flat bottom. Whenever I know it’s gonna be sitting a while I run the gas out of the carb, same with the big boat. But I also premix. I never have a problem. I also clean the carb every other year. Can’t beat a 2 stroke. Diesel or gas haha. I’ve always ran Johnson engines. Prob because pawpaw was a Johnson evinrude mechanic so I’m kind of bias. But never had a problem with them. Had a 135hp and drove it all the way back to the ramp with a broke in half crankshaft!!!!! No kidding

I’m like you I want it to start when I get to the water whether it’s 20 degrees or 90 degrees I’d find a good reputable mechanic and if they couldn’t get er firing up every time I’d get another one! Good luck on your search

It’s not in north Alabama, but when I bought my new mercury 4 stroke the cheapest I found was Jaco’s marine in Lawrenceberg Tn. He usually has a pricing list on his website. Get ya a 4stroke and don’t look back. Lol

Be sure and check Freedom Marine just North of the big bridge in Guntersville. They have treated me very well every time I’ve dealt with them.

I have a Yamaha 4 stroke 50 and it's been a great motor. Depending on your dealer network in your area, if I was buying today I would look first at Suzuki, Yamaha in that order and if prici was right the Tohatsu. That Tohatsu is hard to beat and is usually a good bit cheaper. That Suzuki is just one awesome motor today though. They just don't seem to ever break down. They all have great technology built in today. Clean gas, annual oil and filter change, lower unit service and by annual water pump. Should be virtually maintaince free from then on.

Honda motors are great but there is not many around here that will work on them, that being said there aren’t many problems with them.
