Will a spinning reel work on a rod that does not have the customary first large eye that usually comes on a spinning rod?

I think it will work fine if you are crappie fishing and using the 12 ft. like a jig pole or for spider rigging....the large eye (actually, usually first two) is for when you are casting for bass or throwing a roadrunner...when casting, the line comes off the spool in circular spirals and the first two eyes are for reducing the spirals down to moving the line in a straight line...

Been casting spinning reels on (2) 8ft West Point rods for several years. They are my very inside rods for cranking. Trust me when I say they work just fine....
