Thread: Fishing beside Blakely

Went to the foot Friday. As I was pulling up to where I wanted to fish, low and behold there’s Billy Blakely. Hot dog, I am in the right spot!! He’s getting his rods out and talking and laughing with this man and woman couple in his boat. So, I go to getting my stuff in the water and thinking “I am going to shadow this dude all day, and hopefully get my first limit”! Well I started out with a pink jig head and chartreuse skirt tipped with a miner on the bottom hook, and just a minner on the top hook with a half ounce weight above my three way swivel. Just like I have seen them on YouTube. Well I commence to trolling trying to keep pace with him. We fish a little with no luck, he over there laughing and talking, and me listening to every word he says. I have my lines from the bottom up to about 8 feet. Then he catches a fish. A few minutes by and he catches another one. Every fish I’m watching. Well I hear him tell someone that he is fishing about ten feet deep, so I commence to getting my four poles at around ten feet deep, with still no bites. He catches another couple. I notice he only has one hook and heard him say that he was using a quarter ounce weight above. Now I didn’t have any weight that small and I commence to cutting off the jig and just used one minner. I got a few bites, while he and his clients kept putting the fish in the net. All the time getting mad and frustrated because I was using all the same stuff he was, except the quarter ounce weight. I did end up adding another minner to the three way swivel, but it seemed all that did was get me hung up more. I did end up with five nice fish, and I’m good with that. But I think the most important part was that I learned something. The bite was light. They wasn’t doubling the poles into the water. They were lightly biting it, and I believe just the simple detail like using a quarter ounce weight instead of the half ounce was a big difference. You can bet that I will have some quarter ounce weights with me next time!
