    Default First try

Ok so the fishing today was horrible, I couldn’t even catch a cold. The only thing I caught was one little catfish.

So came home and decided to finally try the jelly/hackle jig. Weeks ago after Shipahoy told me of this concept I headed out to Walmart and Hobby Lobby for supplies. Had a hard time finding stuff but managed to get a few things that would work. I have tons of my dads old bass lures and want to put them to use. I asked my 3 yr old daughter if she would like to help make lures for her tackle box and she jumped at the chance. So we set down and started coming up with ideas. I let her pick but I did the needle work. Still need to glue them but I think they might get a nibble.

The only flash tinsel I could find was a ribbon that had it woven in. We cut the ribbon and removed the tinsel to use. The photo doesn’t show it well but we have multiple colors to choose from. I think this has potential and I think we will get better. It was a good time with my daughter and she loves filling her new tackle box. My dad would love knowing this.

Being new at this, I think you should save some of these to look back at in a year or two. Will be interesting to see how you go from here!

Thanks Skip, If these catch fish then we have basically an endless supply of worms to make these. My dad had bags of worms and with cutting them up you can get many jigs from one. I enjoyed doing these with my daughter and will let her do more the older she gets. Something about a 3 yr old holding a sharp needle scares me now...lol. The leftover pieces of worms will be modified and turned into other lures like spoonminnow. Lots of long curly tails not quite sure what to do with though.

Can tell you that I have seen some guys start and keep their first one to look at and compare later one. I have been tying jigs for something close to 14 years now and with I had kept some of the ugly ones I first did. I didn't have the idea of the jelly jigs then so all were chenille jigs that I tied. Thankfully some seemed to like them and that gave me confidence to continue. So yes now I wish I had my first few! Just an FYI thing!

There will only be one first time of making these with your daughter, to save a few for future reflection might mean a lot later. Great job on including her with such a project.

Well I feel good. Trapped in house by Florence (windy & rain) and daughter asked and wants to make more fishing lures. So I’m going to go spend time with her making more. Post pics later.
