If you have good enough electronics and the transducer is on the front of your boat, if your pushing crankbaits or jigs, you out to be able to see the depth they are running. Also find a flat, let out enough line if trolling cranks, let enough line out and watch your rod tips to see when they drag bottom, check your line counter reel depth counter to see how deep your running and check the arkie or Bandit depth chart to see how close it is. It will give you a idea how close your cranks and setup is. Just a FYI.

Default When calculating your crank bait depth.....

Yep, thats what I do, it lets me know how my numbers on reel relate to actual depth. I mostly push so i can usually see mine as it goes through the cone. Here is a pic while pushing around a lock wall, you can see both weight and crank

New to this game and curious . If the rod tip is within 6 inches of the water ,will it matter if you have 34 ft. out rather than 35 ? Fish are not in the water column in a specific depth . Will listen .

I don’t get that technical as if you look at the various depth charts, letting out, let’s say, 10 ft of line only relates to an additional depth of a foot (plus or minus) that your bait is running as a example. Look at the depth charts of arkies and bandits when long lining for what I mean to explain.

It makes a difference but I was told 8 or 10 years ago, quit stressing the small stuff and I am getting better at that. With that said, the other day the right combination was 30 foot of line out at 2.3 mph, 18 footer had 40 foot out and it WAS NOT getting hit. I raised the rod tip about 7 foot off the water and bam!! When they are dialed in tight on a depth this techinical stuff comes in handy. By the way, a 2lb Grenada slab will fold an 18 foot rod at 2.3 mph!!!!!

You will get a different action out of the way the crankbait is running, different wiggle and wobble, with the way your line is running at the angle to it by raising and lowering the tip of the rod. Sometimes it makes a difference.
