    Default Wylie 5-8-18

Back out on Big Allison this morning. We did not get lines in the water till about 9. Caught about 6 crappies & a couple of perch right off the bat. Bite died about 9:30 so we put up the long lines. Moved down the river & started looking for perch. At out first stop, the perch were waiting for us. Caught a bunch on minnows. Left the biting to try down closer to the power lines. Good move. Perch biting just about as fast as we could get the minnows down. Just about ran out of minnows so we started using some cut herring. Size & bites really picked up.

Ended up with 6 crappies & about 140 perch. Finally, we got into some good size perch. Bite should get even better as the water heats up.

I target perch all winter on Murray but rarely target them in the warmer months. What kind of water depths are they in during the summer? What type area/topography are you looking for?

Charles you need to break out the Flexit spoons. They are fun to use when you get on the perch and they strike really hard .You'll think it is a much bigger fish.

Perch fishing is not as straightforward on Murray as it is on Wylie. Like you, I catch them in colder weather when they school up on the bottom. They seem to scatter and disappear on Murray in warmer weather, but Wylie they are pretty consistent year round.
The occasional ones I catch on Murray now are when I am pulling jigs for crappie.

SeaRay, thanks for the reply. That has been my experience on Murray (and Clarks Hill) too. I wonder if Greenwood would be easier to get on them in the warmer months. I know Catfish Guide Chris Simpson offers summer perch jerking trips for kids on Greenwood. I may have to try it sometime since that's the closest lake to my house.

Usually, I find perch in 20 to 25' in the places you normally look for bass once the water warms up. The ends of points are really good. Humps are another good spot. If nothing shows up on the fish finder, try all the way up to 15' & down to 35'. We have the best luck with minnows & cut bait. Most bites will come just off the bottom. Any kind of cut bait will work from time to time. Gold spoons & silver spoons will catch them also.
