Most manufacturers measure boat milage in gallons per hour at WOT. I’d fill up my tank and run it for a half hour then fill back up. You can figure it from there. You could just get a tank with a gauge built on it.

What kind of mileage should I expect with my two cycle 40 hp pushing a 17 ft aluminum boat. Just wondering how far I can safely get on six gallons!

Do yourself a favor and go buy a 9 gallon tank. You can thank me later. Had a 6 gallon on a 50 hp Yamaha and it seemed like I always was empty when I got to the ramp especially on Sardis and enid.

I can get about 14-16 miles on my 40 merc 4 stroke with a 6 gallon tank. Depends on what speed you go and weight in the boat too. I now carry an extra 3 gallon tank if I’m going on a big lake. A 9 gallon will not fit the dimensions of my rear compartment

That is one of those " it depends" kind of answers. How heavy is the boat? How many people aboard? Power trim? I can go a pretty good ways on 6 gallon with my
old 50 Evinrude, but if one the big 4, I carry a spare 3 or 6 gallon tank- just because paddling sux

It’s 12 miles from the Engineers Point ramp at Sardis to about Piney Point which is the other side of Holiday Lodge. Probably 14-16 to Wyatt’s. Thanks a looong haul and a lot of water with a 40hp engine. Two strokes aren’t very fuel efficient either. Put lots of gear in a 17’ Mod V kinda boat and 6 gallons ain’t going to far.
From the levee at Ross Barnett to 43 bridge is 11 miles and that’s as the crow flies.

Thanks for the replies. They all line up with what I was thinking. I'm thinking 11 miles is about the max. I considered trying to install a larger tank but think there is probably not enough room unless I move the batteries up front. Guess for now I'll put a small gas can with a couple of gallons in the back. Meanwhile, I'm going to keep looking for a bigger tank that will fit!
