What kind of snake is that, I was fishing Santee cooper a couple years ago and one that looked just like that one fell from a bush about 5 feet from my boat, I just assumed it was a cotton mouth from being so far south, so if anyone knows, what kind is it. Thanks

The one in my photo? It's a corn snake. The snake you saw on Santee Cooper was most likely a harmless water snake in the Nerodia genus (not sure which species and subspecies they have over there) or a harmless rat snake. Most people think any snake in or near water is a cottonmouth ("water moccasin") but they rarely are in most areas. I go out intentionally looking for snakes, and I see 20+ harmless water snakes for every one cottomouth.

Poor water snakes ! With that white patch in their mouth I’ve heard all my life that they were moccasins till I actually seen a moccasin his head is way bigger and sticks out the water 2-3inches or more compared to the water snake that barely pokes his head above the water unless he is climbing out.
