Took our annual trip to Weiss lake last week. Fished March 14-18. Left Kentucky early Wednesday morning and fished 1/2 day that afternoon. Cold front come in and the next morning was 27 degrees with a high of 49 and winds 10-15 mph and gusting over 20. Tough conditions, but we kept scratching out fish. Weather improved as the week wore on, with temps rising and winds getting calmer. Water temps ranged from 48 early in trip to 60 by mid day Sunday.
Early morning bite was best, and we were on the water before sunrise each morning. Fished Little River and Little Spring Creek. Long lining 1/24 jigs. Red head with junebug chart grub was by far hot color. Sunrise til ~ 8:00 am, 6-8 fow at .8-.9 best. Gradually working shallower as days wore on. By 11:00 would be fishing 3-4 fow and burning em pretty fast at 1.3 mph. Water was stained. Caught almost exclusively black crappie and had good size, with lots of 12-14" fish. Nothing over 2 pounds, but lots of pound- pound & quarter fish. Big fish was 1 lb 9 oz.
My brother in law also took his boat and a couple buddies, and they fished yellow creek a lot. Water was much clearer here and they fished 18-20 fow. Red & chartreuse on either a red or black head best color, .8 mph. Best jig depths ranged from a 1/24 & 3/0 split shot to a 1/16 & #7 split. Fish size was not as good, with lots of 10.25-10.5" fish, but seemed to be more numbers of fish. Black & white crappie mix here seemed 50/50.
We stayed at Weiss lake lodge and highly recommend it. As usual, the hospitality was excellent everywhere we went. Didn't catch limits, but caught enough to keep it interesting. Considered it an excellent trip. Those Weiss lake crappie are delicious. Hope y'all enjoy the report & the pics.
