    Default Back to the cabin

I spent the last 4 days at my friend,Charlie's cabin that I wrote about earlier. The cold snap certainty affected the fish, but we still managed a good mixed bag of Crappie, Bass, and Bream. My son gave me some Rapala Ultralight lures so I tied on an original floating minnow in 1 1/2" length and the fish loved it. I caught a couple of nice bass, a Bream and then a 5 # Mudfish decided to attack it. In the ensuing melee he managed to break off the lip when I had him netted to recover my plug.
I didn't realize the lip was gone (he also straightened several of the hooks on the two trebles) so I kept using it and caught two nice crappie. Later when I realized the lip was missing checked the pictures and sure enough they had hit the lipless lure. Name: 20180305_152132_resized.jpg

I also got the menu upgraded from squirrel to quail .We fed about 14 hungry guys fried quail, yellow grits, rice, and cole slaw and gravy of course. We finished that off with some banana pudding Charlie's wife had made for us.

We decided to try a oxbow lake in the hunt club property the next day. We caught enough for lunch but the main attraction was the total solitude of the place. We never heard a car, plane or person the entire time. Course, it was off the beaten path by quite a bit.

The picture doesn't do justice to how steep the ramp was. Charlie and his friends dug this out of the steep bank to allow access to the small lake.
One last picture, this being the man cave at the cabin where We do some of the cooking.

No, it is on his family land, they are all farmers. He is up there a good bit himself. His hunt club is adjacent to their property. I had a shot at a hog also, but iron sights, 30-30, 73 year old eyes and a 150 yard shot is asking too much. Need to brush up om my shooting. haven't done any in a long time.

That looks like a great time. My sister had a place up there alot like that. Spent a pile of time there during some very troubled years a while ago in first marriage. Thanks for sharing.

Ray, really enjoyed your report. Looks like a place to spend many hours at before deciding what to do Back to the cabin if anything but setting watching the world go around.

Had 2 different places like that in my lifetime but theyre all but gone now since all the old folks have died out. I was the young 'un in the crowd with everybody else being atleast 20 years my senior. This day and time there just isn't any opportunites for me to get into something as good as those were anymore, and truthfully, I doubt those opportunites are even out there for hardly anyone anymore. I certainly miss it though. Enjoy as long as you can because tomorrow could end it all.

Well said Butch. When Charlie is here, he cooks lunch every day for his brothers and dad and they come in from the farm and enjoy a good meal and fellowship. He is usually joined by several local friends he grew up with. I am fortunate to know many of them even though I am a few years older than most of them.
I had the opportunity to attend the Brownsville Baptist Church Brotherhood meeting Monday night, Just a handful of local faithful to a church that was started in 1776. Charlies brothers cooked a chicken bog for the attendees. But things like this are slowly disappearing form the landscape and I worry for my grand kids and the world in front of them,
but yes I realize the value of this opportunity and cherish every moment.
