One of my DNR buds is a fisheries biologist at the St Stephens fish hatchery. She(yes she's a young lady and an incredibly talented artist) shared these two pictures of a Mudfish(Bowfin) in spawning colors. Kinda blew my mind, I've never seen them like this.
Y'all ever seen them this color?

Looks like someone used dye on them. Never knew they turned to those colors. Interesting and thanks for posting the pics.

That is the first time I have seen green tinted Mudfish. Used to catch a bunch of the in the Pee Dee River swamps on white spinner baits just for the fun of of a good fight.
We could call it Mean Green because these are fighting son-of-a-guns.
Thanks for these unusual and interesting pics.
Googled "bowfin green fins" and looked at the Images link .... lo and behold, several pics defining that males get green fins during breeding season, sure enough![]()
I've only seen ONE Bowfin "in the flesh" in my entire life ... and that was caught by a buddy of mine, out of a pay lake, back in my teen years ... little guy, about 10" long.
I have caught a lot of them here in SE Va but never with colors like that and I can't remember that spot on their tails.

I figured some would think the picture was photo shopped but she has shared other pictures that were also surprising but true. She has a crawfish that is vivid blue. I was amazed that they turn blue during one of their stages. She's a pretty sharp lady.

I’ve never seen one like that either! Very bright and vivid colors! But it looks like your female friend could use a manicure and shave her legs though!

Only color I ever seen them was "muddy".
