I guess I'm overly anal but I have always, since day one, carried my cell phone in a case on my belt. One reason I have the iPhone 4 is that's the biggest size I'm willing to carry on my belt. If I put a phone in my pocket, I'd lose it within an hour.
And the case has to have a belt loop to slide belt through because I also learned that a clip will pop off when I bend over.

If you've ever watched any of those magnet "fishing" videos on youtube, you know this is a common problem. Those guys pull out piles of phones and rusty pocket knives. I always put mine inside the center hatch on my kayak.
