I'm a Southerner through and through, but I did lived in SD for four years. The hunting and fishing was great during the small window of opportunity available compared to what I was accustomed to down South. I thought I would try ice fishing, but right before I went, a guy was sitting there over his ice hole and was attacked by a mountain lion. Y'all (northerners) have an extra gene us Southerner guys don't have, or need. Cold tolerance is not a virtue and can be bred out of y'all if you will just move South! ;-)

Yes, I've broke ice before backing in and it broke my transducer mount,I've also powered slowly through ice,it scratched the paint up on the bottom of my aluminum boat.

I was worried about breaking my transducer as well. I don't think fiberglass would do very well if I tried to power through ice.

Holy Crap! I don't think I have to worry about mountain lions attacking where i'm fishing. that's a crazy story. And yes we are born to live in the cold 10 months out of the year...or 6 months something like that

A few years back, in a long drawn out Michigan spring, I was chomping at the bit to get the boat in the water and was watching the ice on a local lake slowly deteriorate. After a very windy day I found that the ice had broken up and the lake was finally open water. I called my brother in law and we agreed to give it a try the following day. The wind died over night and the temp dropped into the high teens/low 20's. When we got to the launch shortly after daylight we found that the lake had skinned over with 3/4" of ice with just enough open water at the launch to get the boat off the trailer. We motored slowly, letting the weight of the boat break the ice in front of us until we got to our fishing spot, then used the landing net to scoop ice out of our trail so we could fish. You should have seen the looks we got from the residents when they saw two guys in a boat in the middle of a frozen lake, fishing like they didn't have a care in the world.

And to think.....it's treatable.

Yep, and my southern family and friends remind me I ain't right.

However, I have a cousin who lives in northern Georgia who wants to come up and give ice fishing a try.

I have done it many a time with my aluminum jon boats. I don’t worry about the paint,,,that’s why paint comes in a spray can.

Hard part of winter is being cooped up with my wife. She agrees, but reverses the complaint.
