Fishing with HD is a fun trip

I took my good friend and lawn mower repairman, Hippy Dave Ohms out this morning for some crappie fishing. Of course he was using his favorite lure, a Bass Assassin Pro Tiny 2" Limetreuse Glow plastic jig on a 1/16 oz jig head. I was a very good guide this morning. Grin. We landed 10 keepers and some short crappie along with 1 small bass, 1 yellow bass, 5 Bluegills (I caught), and we each landed a catfish. His was an ugly channel catfish and mine was a pretty Blue catfish. Grin.
I have a story on the catfish that he caught. We were spot locked on an off shore drop off and I had just made a cast when he hooked up and said that he had a catfish. Without thinking, I just laid my rod down and picked up the net and netted his fish when he finally brought the fish in on 4 lb test line. We were sitting in 18 feet of water. After netting his fish, I looked around for my rod and lo and behold, it was missing. Bummer. The rod/reel had taken a dive over the side of the boat and we didn't even know what had happened until I raised the trolling motor. All the line that I had cast out, along with the jig and 4 inches of rod tip were snugly wrapped around the prop of my Minn Kota I-Pilot. "Crazy" Ivan had grabbed my line and yanked my new rod/reel over board. We tried to retrieve it with a heavy spoon, but couldn't find it. I had just bought this rod and reel about 4 weeks ago and it didn't have a lot of experience on it. Well, MaGoo, you did it again.
Stuff happens when you are fishing and not all of it is good. LOL I did catch a crappie or two and I stubbornly refused to fish with the hot color for very long. I have a habit of changing lure colors even when the fish are telling you what color they prefer on any certain day. I have always said 'Don't fall in love with a favorite lure. It will break your heart like your first girlfriend." I put Hippy on this lure last year and I don't think that he has fished with any other color since. It is hard to beat. Grin. But, one day, Hippy........
Hippy caught three 13" fish on our first spot, an off shore spot on the main river channel. We landed 5 of our keepers there early. Then we went to a community hole that has been void of fish all summer and although we scanned the spot, and we didn't see any fish on the graph, we decided to make a few casts anyway. Hippy caught a 14" White Crappie that looked like it had been on a fast. It was as skinny as a razor blade and we released it with instructions to get off its lazy fins and go catch some shad.
I was the bluegill king today. While Hippy was reeling in very good thick quality slabs, I was catching the heck out of bluegills. I wasn't even trying either. We had a great morning of laughing, moving around the Harrison Bay State Park area and generally having a wonderful morning that our Lord had given to us today. Lunch at the Dockside Cafe was a great way to top of the morning. Afterward, I went home and had a nap.
