Them are some beauties Bill. I know what you mean about some freezers being over populated. I got to fish yesterday and didn't even take a cooler for fish. There is only so much I need in a year. We did however give a mess to a gent who was wanting fish, he is in his 80's and was happy to get them, for me it was a pleasure to meet him.

Catch and Release
It's great to help our neighbors and friends and of course people that just can't go anymore every once in awhile as long as that doesn't turn into an excuse to be greedy which I know that isn't what you did. You're a generous person and that's a good thing. I give some away on occasion too. I just release most of em. I've seen people not take em if they weren't cleaned. IMO, they really didn't want the fish bad enough to get them from me. LolOriginally Posted by slackline

I have a couple of people that are able to fish and won't, who want fish but won't clean them. I have yet to give them any fish. The fellow we gave fish to yesterday was happy to clean them, he even shares them with a friend of his who is also in his 80's but not in as good of health. There are some folks that make it easier to be generous. Some just feel entitled, hard to be too generous with those folks.

Come up here and get lots of practice on catch and release .Then you thrown the dinks on the bank and release the better ones I guess. Our lakes aren't overpopulated.
Lots of freezers are tho.
BRMWe have an over population problem on some lakes . A 10'' length limit has been tried but with so many the AGFC decided it was counter productive here .

Exactly!!!! Over population...that hurts a fishery more than anything and its hard to get people to understand that. If you fill a farm pond with panfish of any kind and leave it alone. Eventually it will be full of a lot of dinks. Put something in there to maintain the small fish (predators or fisherman) and the fish you have left grew fast enough not to be eaten.

I dont think anybody knows. There is an study from a few years ago from the Minnesota DNR on length limits over 15 years and only 1 lake with length limit in place saw an improvement. Part of what we see as a problem with fish size in a lake could just part of the natural life cycle of a crappie population.

Best we can hope for is fewer floods . When we get our annual floods with this being flood control lake the woods and old fields are full of water . This makes ideal spawning habitat . With huge spawns and when water drops back to normal pool we have way too many fry . This slows growth and hurts the fishery . We need a special regulation for a few years to take the limit off Crappie 9'' and under . But was told they could not do it . Some people keep the little ones but many folks just toss them back .
I would like to see a slot where anything under 9'' would be no limit . I think we could see the lake improve . This limit being raised to 30 could help if everyone kept 30 small ones . But I don't want them . I usually have no problem catching 100 or more but sometimes hard to find good ones .
I think we need more baitfish . Most would disagree with that statement but when most are Gizzard Shad they grow too fast to be prime feed for smaller Crappie . Trouble is a shallow flood control lake gets too cold to over winter Threadfin Shad .
The AGFC did annual studies where they counted what we had in the lake by net barrier across a cove and rotenone for years. Now they are limited to electro fishing and Crappie net traps last I heard. Wish we could hear from the area fisheries biologist . I think they don't have an answer to the problem .
Maybe Matt or one of the other AGFC guys can contact them and have them tell us what they can do . i think the main one in this area is Frank Leone .
