Default Lesson Learned - Loudon 8/13

So they say you learn something new every time you go out, whether you catch any fish or not...

Personally, I have to disagree with that. If you get skunked, you never never really figure out what worked or what you did wrong. It's been a while since I've posted as I haven't been able to get out much, but on top of that, the last few times there hasn't been much to report on. I went on a streak of catching nothing but dinks earlier in the summer, so I set out to learn how to single pole to try to target bigger fish (typically I'm long lining). Thus far, all I've learned is that I apparently don't know squat about single poling.

The first couple of times I went out to try my hand at it, I caught a couple of various fish at best, but generally speaking, I left fairly defeated. Last Sunday began much the same way. Made it out mid-afternoon and was trying out new techniques and new spots, all to no avail. I fished hard for several hours and came up with nothing.

Finally, just as I was about to quit and it was getting later, I decided instead to do a bit of scouting. Never being one much for moderation, I had naturally brought 6 rods with me to "single" pole, so I figured I'd just throw them out and run some lines while I checked out some new areas. Within ten minutes, I had two nice crappie. By the time I wrapped it up, I had caught 10 within an hour or two, including 6 pretty good fish, mostly in the 12-13" range. All in all, most of the day was a bust, but it ended well. Sometimes you just have to go with what you know. Lesson learned.

PS...All fish were caught in 18-20 fow on break lines off of the main channel near creek mouths. Colors of the day were blue black chart (hot grubs) and a newer item for me, Zoe's Glow Crappie Magnet (inspired by Pantastic - thanks!).

Good job! I'm just the opposite, as my confidence is in single pole. We should compare notes sometime!

I'd be glad to ET Fish. I've fished my whole life single pole for other species, but just never did any crappie fishing growing up. When I started into crappie, I started with trolling and never went back. Just haven't gotten confident with single pole for crappie yet (or finding the spots that are conducive to single pole). I won't give up though. Just trying to get it figured out.
