I always put a couple handfuls of ice and keep the lid closed. Never had a problem. Of course with the aerator going. I use an electric aquarium air pump when I keep minnows overnight.

    Default Minnows overnight

At home, I use a medical oxygen machine that rolls around. On the road I plug my pump in the cig lighter outlet or use a portable oxygen bottle. I leave my lid cranked to help let the smell and CO2 out.

Better change some of the water every now and then. Without a filter system the water gets dirty and the ammonia will build up in it.
