I caught a 10# grass carp on a crankbait last year on the Gasconade. The current was pretty swift where I hooked it so I just knew I had on a giant smallmouth. It was disappointing when I finally saw what it really was.

Headed to river early. Started out casting for bass or whatever. I hooked a nice crappie and lost it at the boat. Then caught 2 skippies. Hubby chopped them up for fish bait. He catches a 2 1/2 lb lm bass. That was all we could catch. Decided to run up river to were we caught the suckers before. We knew we could tie up in shade there. Got set up. Casted my one rod out with cut bait. I needed to tie on another hook on other rod. Well while I was trying to get my other rod ready I caught 2 blue cats on the other one. I ended up with 4 blue cats all on cut bait. We could t catch anything on crawlers. Hubby caught 1 cat. So while floating down the river and casting at the bank to try and catch bass I hooked something. It was big. Water still murky so when we saw the tail we thought I had hooked a channel cat. Fought like a cat. Didn't want to come up. It wanted to stay under boat. Hubby had to keep moving boat around to try and get fish. Finally we saw it and landed it. I had a 9 lb. grass carp. Lure was in its mouth. That was a good fight on my little 5 ft. Ultralight pflueger rod and reel. 15 lb. braid and tossing blue and chrome lipless crank. BPS XPS lure. No pic this time.

A 9 lb. grass carp should a given you all you wanted on a 5 ft. rod. Thanks for the report, sounds like you had a hoot....
I have been shooting grass carp with a bow several years.Usually around 5-30 pounds. The reaction is about always the same....They take off like a rocket, screaming drag....
