Papaw and his brother, Arthur, were both at Omaha as well. Papaw was wounded and Arthur was killed. I can't imagine what those brave men went through.

The soldiers sacificed a lot. Some did not return. Others came home either physically or emotionally scarred. They were the greatest generation...

my dad was a medic and served during Operation Overlord. He said very few words regarding his service despite my persistent inquiries. His generation was cut from different cloth. Their actions spoke volumes despite their lack of words. Hard to believe that our nation went from this to what it is now in 73 years. Sad...

My Dad was there on a small supply ship that was running supplies back and forth between England and France. He was a Gunners Mate and he said that he sat in his turret for three days. The cooks would bring sandwiches and a bucket of water with a "dipper" in it that they all shared. They were truly the Greatest Generation!

When I was a kid, I asked him if he ever shot a plane down. He said he didn't know, but he sure shot a lot of rounds!

Truly great men and women to tolerate the hell they went through. My dad and four brothers all served. All came home different men. My dad was the only one injured severely and was classed as 100% disabled. Everyone's life was different after that time period. My family didn't talk about those days because it would upset my dad and his brothers. It was best left alone and they kept their secret hell to themselves. All have passed now and are resting in peace. I hope we never have to fight another war but it looks we are going to have it here in America with all the crazies out there. I certainly hope not though!
