Chickamauga Lake crappie report 5/31/17
School is out down here so I got to take my friend, Gary Fomby, who is a biology teacher at Central High School and also the Athletic Director, out for some crappie fishing. He was completely out of fish and his wife, Vanessa, really loves to eat crappie. So, we hit the water early this morning.
We fished vertical structure and docks. Found fish on both types of structure and the fish really didn't seem to have a preference for color today. They hit just about everything that we threw. I will list the colors that I can remember that caught fish. Bass Assassin Limetreuse Glow, S&P Phantom, and Bluegrass. Bobby Garland chimed in with Full Moon Slab Slayers, Green Thunder, Emerald Shad, Bayou Boogie, and Bluegrass. Most of the fish were deep and we used 1/16 and 3/32 oz jig heads on the deeper structure. On the shallower docks, we used 1/24 oz jig heads.
We started at daylight and quit by 11:20 AM. If the old Drumking hadn't forgotten the net, we could have finished by 10:00. We had 8 really nice slabs pull off at the boat as we were either trying to lip them or lifting them. We hooked up 40 and actually landed 32, culling a couple of smaller fish. Put the net in the boat, DK.
Water temp was 72-75 depending on whether we were in the river or back up in a creek fishing docks. I caught a little Rock Bass and the smallest crappie that I can remember catching in a long time. It takes great skill to catch a crappie as small as this one. Grin. All Black crappie and no Whites today. That is it for the report. It is time for a nap. LOL
