Thread: Kitchen Pass

I have a good Wife. In fact, a VERY GOOD Wife. I called her when I was 2 blocks from home yesterday and asked her to open the gates and help me back the other woman to her resting place. I backed in and got out to unhook and she looks at me and says " Why are you unhooking? Aren't you going tomorrow? " I haven't even walked inside yet after a good day on the water and I just got a kitchen pass for another go at it!! Can't tell ya what it is, but I must be doing something right.

Fast forward to this morning at about 0600 I headed back to where I spent yesterday. Light in the sky told me I was starting later than usual as I like to be where I want to fish before the sun. I know, that's crazy. But it's me. NOBODY at the ramp except trailers and one other boat putting in, and he looked to be chasing green fish. Now that's crazy! Anyway, got to where i wanted to be, and nobody there. I'm a happy guy. Pull 4 rods out of the box and grab the 10' SHSS and pull out about 12' of line, thinking how much Shu would be enjoying this right about now, and drop the jig in to go to work. It took a couple of drops, but a major league thump with authority was my reward. Set the hook and heard a little music from the drag and the adrenaline took a jump. This first fish didn't like the way I looked or something cuz he did every trick to not come to visit. Finally in the net I took a moment to think back to how long it had been since i got a fish this nice as a first of the day, and I couldn't remember any. Tipped the scale at 1lb 6oz and just over 14 1/2", but skinny to look at. I can't tell male from female unless it's obvious but this one looked like it must have been post spawn. I won't go fish by fish but I will say that the clicker said 9 by the time 30 minutes had passed. These knees don't dance anymore but I sure felt like it. About this time I hear a voice. Turn around to find my friend Eddie has come to fish too. He and I can fish the same spot and not get into each others space, and we enjoy each others company. The day is looking up.

Eddie and I fish different and we both catch fish. We moved around some and true to form from past trips, the bite slows. I had an advantage this time because Camryn and I had the same thing happen a few weeks back. I picked up the Nanofil rod with the 1/64 and started looking for players. Over the next couple of hours, the Itty Bitty Swimmers put one fish after another in the boat at a steady pace. Eddie and I had started talking and weren't 15 feet apart when I got another hit. Once again the drag spoke, more this time on a smaller rod, and I wondered if I had a LMB. Finally on the surface, another good Crappie came to the net. This one is in the pic below, and was just a sneeze short of 15" and 1lb 12oz. Caught on a 2lb outfit, it was a ton of fun.

A phone cal with the wife, the heat building and leaving me wanting shade, and my bowl of cereal from this morning was long gone. The house was calling and I had to go. The clicker had 26 and Eddie got a few of my fish to put with his, but the rest of mine were released for another day. I had a lot of fun yesterday but today was very close to off the charts for me. As my friend Cane Pole would say, I had a Large time. Pulled out of the ramp parking lot at about 1130 and had no fish to clean. Having swapped phone numbers with Eddie, we agreed to share a boat and swap some technique between each other. Once again the catch was doubled by down sizing and slowing down.
