I started drop shotting for smallies over a dozen years ago. Extremely effective presentation for that species. I've used it most recently (past 2 seasons) for crappie and it does work. However, I believe there are more effective presentations, such as vertical casting, single pole jigging and pulling that focus on covering more territory than drop shotting can. If you are limited to one small area, it can be just as effective as anything else. Just not a very good search tool, in my opinion.
