Snapping turtles can be ferrous. Years back when I used to spend a lot of my week end time off gathering my thoughts by paddling or poling my pirogue in the swamps of which I owned around 15 acres of. One day I saw a head swimming and bobbing along about 30 yards away. At first I thought it was a snake so I slowly moved in that direction and got close enough to see it was a nice size snapper. I noticed where it went down a few feet from a stump and eased over to it. It the gin clear water I could only see a small part of his shell as he had settled into the silt. I gentle stepped out into the water, which was only about 18 inches deep, trying not to disturb the silt and cloud the water. I couldn't tell which way the head was pointing so I guess it was on the end in the direction in which he had been traveling. I reached down and grabbed him by his sides just as the silt moved to hide him. My grab was good and up he came, head facing away from me popping his jaws. I quickly dropped him into my pirogue. He settled down and I got back in to start the trip home. Now the turtle was in the very bow and there was a seat between he and I. After traveling a hundred yards of so the turtle decide to come check me out in the back of the pirogue. Well once he got over the seat I stepped out into the water and gave him the back of the pirogue. I took over his spot in the front and started poling again. He wasn't happy with that end of the priogue either or he was mad at me because he turned around and headed over the rear seat and came at me again. Well this time I stepped out into the water and decided to dispatch him then and now. All I had to defend myself was a machete so as he came over the front seat I smacked him right between the eyes drawing blood. He quieted down in the front and we again headed home. About 15 minutes later he woke up and turned around and again headed toward me. Welding the machete again, I beat his head again and he came over the front seat. This time I hit him several times and figured I had smashed his head in for good. When I got almost to high ground, you guessed it, he came alive again and tried to get to the back of the pirogue again. This time I was able to get a good shot of him and severed his head partially off. At that, he ended his attack and we make it home without any other attacks. I hauled him home and made a couple of nice meals of him. He weighted around 30 pounds and the sauce piquant was delish.
