Caught fish from 2 ft deep to 12 ft deep and all had eggs at different stages last weekend.

I've always enjoyed jig fishing for spawning crappie shallow in the cypress filled oxbows of the White River. But even though we caught plenty of dark colored males up around the cypress we caught bigger females suspended 20 to 30 feet out in front of the trees. There does seem to be a correlation between the depth the shallow males are preparing the beds and the depth at which the females will suspend. I have always been told that the spawn is determined by water temp only. I really think that just like the deer rut, length of daylight has a big influence on crappie and not just water temp only. Storms, floods, and cold run-offs all probably make a big difference.
CATCH A BIG-UN
Latest AGFC fishing reports total BS as usual . Got several friends camping on Nimrod . All complaining on how sorry the fishing has been last couple weeks . Took them fish took cook yesterday from another lake . This cold snap will not help and wind has been bad .

I see alot more males caught casting at the bank on the northern clear lakes that I fish . Most females seem to hold out deeper and suspend and I even think they spawn on standing timber and large boulders . I know the fish up here are in all stages of the spawn but most have not spawned at all yet that I can tell except the walleye and they have been doing their thing . I am off next week so I will am hoping for a big wave coming in with the full moon .
Agreed on the cold front. I am thinking the lake I fish is right at the front of the spawn. People think they catch a fish with eggs it's ready to drop. Males are gettin dark in the shallows but I've also seen them get dark in my livewell in January. This is a fish I caught in January, been taking pics to kind of study the progression of eggs throughout the year.
