Thread: Fishing report, Weiss 31 March 2017

Wow, what a tough day. We launched at the Riverside Street launch in the channel and fished the portion of lake down by the dam with no luck at all. We couldn't find any fish on the fish finder and on top of that, we couldn't seem to get out of the wind. After about 90 minutes we left for Bay Springs and after about 45 minutes of no luck, we took off for Yellow Creek - and got the pounding of our lives. 2 foot waves were spaced out just right for a rough ride and we couldn't seem to find the right speed to cut through them. After getting into Yellow Creek, the waves were not as severe but the wind was worse. We fished the causeway up by the fish camp store because it was the only water in the Yellow Creek area that was somewhat sheltered from the wind. No luck there either.

On the way back to the ramp, we went into the Embos Island Road (I don't know the bay's name) area and fished a few boathouses on the south side of the bay that were sheltered somewhat from the wind. While up there we ran into a very nice couple from Lexington KY that told us they were catching fish on white shad bodies. We switched over to Monkey Milk and our luck got much better. Fish were suspended out in the bay and inside the boathouses at about 8-12 feet. We stayed on the boathouses as they provided a little shelter from the wind.

We seemed to be catching 1-2 fish per boathouse, but only about 50% of them would measure 10 inches or better. As the sun got lower in the sky, the wind moderated and we began to catch more fish. And fish began to move up to the outside of the boathouses and we caught a few there as well as shooting inside the docks. Kept 9 good keepers (above 10 inches) but we probably caught around 25-30, all total. Decent recovery for what we thought was going to be our first skunked day on Weiss. All females I cleaned had healthy looking egg sacs but the sacs weren't all that large. I don't think the spawn is quite on, but it can't be too far off - if the weather will moderate somewhat.

I don't wish that wind on anyone and apparently there are much smarter people than us because only a few hardy souls were out there battling the winds.

Wow! Tough day for you for sure. We fished on that Friday as well. We ended up with a easy 60 fish limit. All nice 10.5"-12" keepers. Only caught maybe 5 shorts all day. Fished shad jigs up cork on rocks in less then 3ft of water. Fish were on the banks. Also ran to yellow creek and fished causeway Thurs evening and burnt them up. Maybe that's way you didn't catch any on Friday. LOL! Fished 7 days and all fish were caught in 3ft or less. Fished 3.5hrs Sat morning and caught 40 nice keepers before heading home. It was the warmest week we have ever fished down there and fishing was tough for sure. We were one of the only boats at Bay Springs that were catching them good each day. Everyone else was fishing too deep pulling jigs. We usually pull jigs but we never seen fish on my fish finders so that told me what I needed to do. Shallow!
