Crappiekrazy came down for the annual Lake Wylie crappie Friday so we could get out early Sat morning. Due to a malfunction all the minnows we had purchased Fri night were dead but we went out anyway. Launched at Nivens and started longlining right in front of the ramp. 6 minutes later we landed the first crappie. After that we had trouble catching any crappie but the white perch were hitting and most were pretty nice size so we decided to keep some in case the crappie bite didn't materialize.
After the sun came up a little the crappies started hitting. We found a couple of spots they were holding and just kept circling through and picking up fish. After a while we headed up the lake to another creek and found the crappie hitting there too. Saw a couple boats from the Crappie USA tourney but not alot of traffic.
Water temp at 7am was 62, 65 by 3pm. 6-10 FOW seemed to produce the best. Any color jig with a dead minnow worked well. Final tally was 21 crappies mostly 11-12 inches with 1 14 incher and 13 nice perch. Threw back 4 cats and about 2 bushels of small perch. Will post pics when I learn how to.
