    Default Humminbird GPS Puck Setup

For those of you running the heading sensor, are you just using it on the bow or at the transom? I currently have the AS GRP on the transom and connected to my 998c hdsi unit at the console. I'm planning on upgrading the console unit to Helix 10 G2N and sticking the 998c up on the bow. My plan was to keep the AS GRP puck back near the transom transducer for accuracy in marking structure and then add a heading puck up front for the bow unit so I can see my direction when slow trolling. When I'm graphing at the console, I'm usually moving fast enough that the arrow shows up on the maps anyways so figured there's not much need for the heading sensor back there.

This setup made the most sense in my head. If you disagree, let me know why. Thanks.

Your thought process is very valid ...

GPS use at the console is generally fast enough to keep Course Projection and the boat icon visible on the Chart view ...

The AS GPS HS antenna is more beneficial on the bow because of the slower speeds used at the TM ...

If you have a heading sensor, all it will do is pick up changes in the bearing you are heading. I mounted mine on the console for my MK, as long as it is mounted parallel to the keel it does not really matter where you mount it because it knows nothing other than what angle you are away from 0 or true north. Some folks are arguing the best place for it, but based on its function, it does not matter, as long as there is a difference between where the GPS is located and where the sensor is located parallel to the keel. Now if it is a GPS puck it needs to be close to whatever you want to be close with. If you want the Transducer close to what you mark, then put it over the transducer, if you want the trolling motor over the mark, put it on the front.

X2! Rickie's post. That is how my 999ci and 958DI is setup.
