    Default Rookie Crappie Fisherman

Hello to all! I have decided to start crappie fishing this year and I have know idea what I'm doing. I was raised on catfish and that's all my dad ever did but I'm ready to get the most out of fishing. I just bought a 12 foot Jon boat and this is the first time I wont be fishing from the bank. And if your wondering how long Ive been sitting on the bank I'm 32, so its been a while. I know during the spawn the crappie are pretty shallow but what about now? Are they still deep or are they moving into shallow water? Ive seen lots of yall's pics and and getting pretty excited about landing that first slab. Any advice or tips would be great. Thanks.

Hey salty, Welcome to the crappie universe! You wont be dissapointed that you chose to start crappie fishing. Right now it really depends on what lake your on. Eufaula might have them on the bank from a foot, all they way to 10 feet. Whereas further north lakes oologah/copan/skiatook they might be stoll holding at 10-20 feet (20ft especially on skiatook they take forever to spawn there). Caught some at 8-12 on oologah sunday. Going to eufaula today. Will let you know.

Every lake is a little different. If you would let us know what lake you plan to fish I'm sure somebody on here can point you in the right direction.

Welcome saltylobster and cjohnson4201 also! Both you guys need to come to the Spring Crappie Camp at Skiatook (see the Oklahoma Crappie Camp subforum.) You'll get a little face to face time with some of the geezers (and youngsters, too.) If you can't come and camp at least plan on driving over for Saturday. Most of us prefer to target Crappie but I still keep a small box at the bottom of my bag for those Smallies and Walleye and catch enough eater channel cats on my crappie jigs to take care of my catfish appetite. Seriously, try to make it to Skiatook - you will enjoy it!

If you are interested in coming to the camp pm me, I have room at my site for an additional vehicle and tent, I'll just have to email the facilitators to let them know of the change.

Eufaula is good I have never caught fish seriously 1 ft from the bank had a jig about 8-10 inches under a bobber and if u put it right on the bank they will hammer it if u are 2 ft from the bank they won't bite u have to be in that 1ft from actually throw onto the shore hit any rocky banks

Thanks to all of you for your responses. The crappie camp sounds great and hopefully I can make it. As long as you guys don't mind teaching a rookie a thing or two.
