Thread: Cadiz Polluting Our Lake Barkley Waters

Wasn't a bill passed to repeal the clean water act? Not sure but it may not be illegal anymore. That sucks. Whole lot of changes being made to our outdoors now.

I believe some are trying to reverse much of the Clean Water Rule, and not the Clean Water Act itself.

Not disputing that it still couldn't possibly result in having an effect with these types of situations but thought I would point out the distinction

I did not post the topic to make it a political issue. I posted this because the City and any decent human being knows they should not be discharging untreated human fecal matter and waste into any water way. I'm sure under any past, current, or future administration, pouring human fecal matter and waste intentionally into a river and lake is illegal and wrong. Again, what I find more disturbing is there are zero, none, nothing about this in the local news as they once again have established the good ole boy system , not wanting anyone to know about this and no one held accountable. That is my point. If you or I intentionally leaked four or five gallons of gas into the lake the Coast Guard would fine us and maybe lock us up.

A lot of water treatment systems can't handle the large influx of water during storms or have some sort of issue and it's not that uncommon for untreated water to get dumped. Not saying it's right but it's more common than you might think. It was really bad back in the seventies and so...boats and tows with toilets dumped right in...septic systems with poor leach fields had pipes that dumped in creeks and some houses hid pipes that dumped straight through. It all found its way in. When I use to fish the Mississippi a lot I had a condom more than once get hung on my line. None of our major river systems are exactly clean. But I have spent the better part of 50 years swimming and fishing them and ate tons of fish from them and I guess I'm okay. Course I spent a good part of my life as a plumber working directly in raw sewage so probably got some immunity I guess LOL. Ain't tons of fish from Barkley and Kentucky both below the spill ways and in the lakes. Way more than the recommended amounts.

I swear I would trade more polluted water to get rid of these Asian Carp. That sounds extreme but those dang things break my heart to think what we use to have in those waters. Especially the spillways.

yep it's happened here and can you imagine how much LOUISVILLE KY can dump in a matter of minutes? The Ohio is cleaner that it's been in years because of the clean water act.

I think we all agree when we get a frog strangler rain and it overflows the systems, it's going to let sewage into the waterways. It has no other place to go in many cases. The major issue folks are having with this Cadiz deal is it happened at a time of low water flow and the city chose to dump it in the creek rather than bring in a contractor with a vacuum truck to clean out the pump station. They brought in a vacuum truck after the s*** hit the fan and the media got involved.

mrdux, EXACTLY, I think people are not reading the context of the story, it had nothing to do with flooding or unforeseen conditions, the City of Cadiz intentionally and willfully poured the sewage into the water ways and did not hire a vacuum truck until they were exposed by the media . Again, I clearly understand floods and other issues happen which are out of control of technology and system capabilities, but when you intentionally pour human waste and raw sewage into the water ways this is going down a complete other path.

I have worked in the waste water industry for over 17 years, the situation you described was illegal when I started and still very much illegal today. It will never be ok to dump any untreated waste water. Ky div of water takes this very seriously I'm sure they would like to know about that incident.
I would feel ashamed to know anyone who worked in waste water did this knowingly and with out some sort of alternate disinfection, which you may not have noticed...
