Friday I took off work around noon and headed back out to Black Lake. The dang grass at Dixon's Landing is the worse I've seen it this year, I hate to even think about what it's going to be like this summer
I haven't been able to find any fish yet this year spawning in shallow water but I spent 3 hours anyway trying to find some before I went to my 19' honey hole and picked up 7 keepers and threw back a bunch of little ones. Here's a pic of a double I caught
Duckcomando was thinking about coming to Black Lake with me Saturday if I did any good but when I got back to the landing I called DC to tell him I didn't do too good but he told me to get my stuff together and meet him at Grand Bayou saturday morning that he had caught some big fat black crappie spider rigging deep water. Heck yeah, I was excited to hear that! Only problem is, I have very limited experience spider rigging! I recently went to Grizzly Jig's website and ordered some 10' Black widows and some Grizco rod holders but I haven't used them much yet. Anyway Saturday morning I got out to the lake early, sat on a brushpile near DC's house and watched the sun come up
I picked up 2 nice fish right off the bat. As soon as the sun was up DC came out and I followed him out near a place we had dropped some brush a couple of weeks ago and started? getting all of our trolling gear out. I watched how he set his up and I tried to do what he was doing. I told him to just go on up ahead and I'd follow a couple hundred yards behind. I don't even know if I got a bite, haha! Not too long into it I kept thinking about that brushpile I left 'em biting on, so I picked up my gear and cruised up to DC and told him I was gonna go back to where I had caught a few and if he started getting into 'em to give me a holler and vice versa. I went back to the brushpile and never had another bite! I moved to another 'pile and picked up a couple of throw backs then I tried throwing a road runner for awhile along a wooded bank that had some fallen over tops on it... but nada! I picked up and was headed to another 'pile we had sunk when DC called and said, "dude get over here", he had picked up 7 in the last 30 minutes..heck yeah! As soon as I got over there he had a fish on
While I was still setting up, bam... he had another one on!
We trolled side by side for a couple of hours but while he was catching nice black crappie all I keep catching was bar fish, a bunch of 'em! DC realized I wasn't weighting my lines down enough, with the wind blowing we had to troll a little faster and my jigs were running higher up the water column where the crappie weren't at but the bar fish were. Man, not long after I got the right weights on I started catching some of them big mama's too! DC had to head back due to prior engagements so we trolled back to his house and wouldn't you know it right before he picked up all his gear another big mama decided to ride home in his boat with him!
I went back out and ended up with 13 nice keepers. I threw back 10 or so and probably 20 bar fish. My biggest fish was right at 15" and a little under 2lbs
One of the best things I love about about Crappie.com is that Duckcomando and I have lived only 3.5 miles from each other for 5 years and we probably never would've meet if it weren't for this forum and I'd still be sitting on the same little spot on Black Lake hahaa. I appreciate you taking me out there and showing me some new tricks Duckcomando, thanks bud!!
