It's striped at the housing. Never saw one do that. I only snugged it a little after hand tightening. The metal can is separated from the plastic filter base. I cut the can off today with my dremmel, and pulled away all of the filter. Still couldn't find enough surface to grab with my vise grips or channel locks. Worked on it for about 4 hours before giving up. I could've went further picking and prying plastic parts away but figured I would tear up more than I achieved. I can see it will be a lot easier I the whole filter housing is removed, but do not trust my limited mechanical skills. I happen to know a crackerjack professional who is only a mile and a half away. I conceded and towed it over with my trusty John Deere.

To top it all off, I also had an emissions warning pop up just before I installed the filter. Apparently I am fixing to spend some change on my work ride, can't complain too much though, it's got 200k on it and this will be the first serious money I've spent.

Chris, have your buddy look at it when he gets that part off and see if it would be possible to mount a remote filter on it. Something you could get to easier.

Thanks Cray. I will do that, never knew such a thing existed but it makes perfect sense. I've worn out 5 diesel trucks in my time 2- 7.3 liter fords, a Dodge Cummins, a GMC, and now a Chevy. Have gotten 400-500k out of all of them except for the GMC that the tornado got at 225k. It seems like everything built in the last few years is very non-owner maintenance friendly.

Update. Got my truck back today from the mechanic. They did exactly as I thought and removed the entire filter housing, got the thing out where they could grip it good and it came off. Said in all their years they had never seen a filter can come loose from the base. They have now. They also fixed my emissions issue, replaced my worn WIF sensor and I left only $200.00 lighter than before. Auto parts store also gave me another new filter. Hopefully I'm back in action with only minimal financial damage and a weekend day of fishing lost.
