    Default Proportion Rules of Thumb?

Thanks to Skip and all the others that post here! After reading and watching some videos I decided to try my hand at tying a few today.

Here are my very first 4 jigs, top down in sequence.

I think I tied the body of the 3rd too long. Maybe all of them are too long?

Anyone have any rules of thumb for good proportions when tying crappie jigs?

No rule of thumb I know of but I try to end my chenille at or before the point of the hook. Just my opinion. Think your doing fin job there though.

I myself also use the point of the hook for a reference how far back. Looking like your well on your way. Willing to bet everyone of them will catch fish. Good job!

    Your welcome!
Tying is mostly a thing of just what the persons wants, but for me stopping the body on a jig would be right around the point and barb. However a fly is different and many of them go to the bend of the hook or more! Just tie your jigs like you want them, for me I like the body stopping before it's past the barb. Seems to me any farther back and it just hampers the amount of space you have for the hook point to get in well.

Also you know fly tying is much more critical as to measurements of the parts where jigs are just different, but know fly tiers really know tying well and I feel reading their lessons are a huge help as that is where I learned to tie, not videos as I don't think the videos were there when I started. I used the lessons at FAOL for learning the language and how to tie in different materials. I knew that I didn't want to tie the fly I was looking at, but if it had chenille then I could use that part on my jigs. Same with other materials like the different kind of feathers and different ways to use them. I say take some time and really study some of that stuff. They also have a fantastic tips page with many many you can use! I am sure the link is in one of the sticky post for any of you that want it!

They're all looking like they'll catch fish. Personally I stop my body chenille at the barb of the hook and for tail length I go one hook shank long. Hope that helps.
