    Default Black Lake 2/10 - 2/11

Well they weren't exactly jumping in the boat this past weekend but we managed to scrap together a nice mess. My dad made it back up fri. I took off work early and met him at Dixon's Landing and we fished from around noon to 5:00 pm. It took us a while to find some fish that wanted to feed, we were marking lots of fish but even slow trolling with a few long poles we weren't able to get anything to bite. We tried fishing the shallows up in the trees where we caught them spawning last year with no luck. (The water temp was 55 degrees) We headed back out to a hole I like to fish and around 3pm they finally turned on, we caught at least 40 in the next 2hrs and ended up keeping 19 nice ones. We caught em 15-17 fd in 19-22 fow. No real slabs but perfect eating size. (I wish I would've taken a picture with dad)

After I brought dad back to the landing I turned around and headed back to the camp and to set some catfish lines. One of the guys we go to church with came out to the camp and we ran em a few times and caught some nice cats.

Saturday morning another buddy met me at the camp around 5am for coffee and a nice breakfast my wife cooked. We headed out and took a few more catfish off the lines then went searching for sacs. We started off casting ultralights with double jigs and slow trolling with a couple of long poles each and we were picking up about a fish every 5-6 mins keeping about half of and throwing back little ones. By about 7:45 we had trolled up close to another guy fishing with his young son and we asked how he was doing and he said he hadn't had a bite. He went on to tell us that he had read on crappie.com that they were tearing em up on Black Lake on the Stretch but he said he guessed whoever was making those reports where full of you know what! He said there ain't no fish up here this year, pulled up his trolling motor and jetted out! (Now, we had just pulled up at least 10 fish within 100 yards of him and I've got crappie.com stickers on my boat and of all y'all that keep up with the Louisiana forum know that I am the only one that regularly posts from that area this year and in every post I always include pics of the fish I catch. I don't recall a single time ever telling anybody that we're tearing em up but I'm always able to scratch up at least a mess and I'm happy with that.) My buddy sitting in the back just started laughing and he's like, "What the heck? Hahaha, I don't know man, some folks just ain't got the patience to find em or wait for em to turn on." Everybody I've talked to up there this year has told me the same thing, there ain't no fish up here this year. I know it's nothing like last year but I'm here to tell y'all it's fine with me, I've got the whole place to myself! Lol
Anyway we wasted a few hours looking for em again in the shallow water but we couldn't find any. The water temp had warmed up to 58 degrees. We went back deep like Friday and ended up keeping 18 pretty nice fish. Sunday morning we stayed up by the camp and picked up 6 keepers before church. Looking at the eggs they should be spawning soon.

Nothing wrong with that mess! I too have had people tell me there aren't any fish in a lake and then I proceed to catch some. It takes equal amounts of patience and knowing where and how to fish and confidence, some people aren't very patience. Did you do any 4 jig fishing?

Hahaa I did try your 4 jig approach and I'm going to need a little more patience with that one! I rigged up 3 long poles with 4 jigs each but I caught 2 at the same time and they got all 3 tangled up. I cut all 12 jigs off and retied but 15 mins later I did the same thing again! I cut em all off again and went back to just 2 jigs on each. My dad got a kick out of it though, me with all my new fangled stuff cause he caught 5 or 6 while I was retieing! I'm new at fishing multiple poles so after I get a little more practice I'll probably try 3 or 4 again.

Most years lots of folks fish at the hwy 9 bridge but the salvania has it so messed up there this year you hardly ever see a boat there unless there's a hard north wind blowing. I fish mostly the north part of the lake from my camp but I also put in at Dixon's Landing off hwy 71 but you've got to fight the grass that way also. If you have any questions send me a PM, I'll be glad to help

The bowls full of filets tells the real story. Congratulations! I love the lake and I know there are fish in it because I have caught some of them. It's just that a few fish are not worth burning up my 90HP. That is the ONLY reason you don't see me up there more often. Looks like I might need to invest in a john boat with one of those mud motors on it just for Black Lake because I do not see the state getting a handle on the salvinia.
