When your long lineing you can use any rod you want as it will all work. I have used 5' ultra light and even fly fishing rods, med. action 6' and 7' spinning bass rods, rods all sizes to 12' b & m's. Tons of fun as you sometimes never know what you might catch. As for line 6lb mono or 10 lb power pro braid is on all my reels.

Just for long lining. for trolling I use 7' rod and bait caster 10lb flou. when it is good we catch up to 50 fish a day Whites,blacks/ crappie/ drum and walleye and when it gets june the catfish are moving in to spawn. when the crappie are in the timber we use 9ft. rods to dip with. Our best long lining is Nov. to March on some big flats. The ultra lite has enough back bone to land 15" crappie and ocasional 3lb walleye but enough tip to allow for the shock of the fireline. I will look at BPS they may not have that model any more. will reply here when I find out and will get the price if they have them and their numbers.

All my long lining rods for the rear of the boat are cheap rods...pinnacle and academy sports brand, 10' down to 5' If someone goes with me I fish off the sides of the front deck and put partner out back running 8 out the back and six out the front sides.

a buddy of mine has a ranger walleye boat and he can run 16 out the back 8 of them being higher quality long rods.

I have lost several rods straight out the back to stripers... so i only run cheap rods

For longlining jigs, we use primarily the BnM BGJP's. They work great and are reasonably priced. Sam Hearings are good too, but you're stepping up in price a little. And yes, for out the side, you need staggered lengths if you're not going to use planer boards. As mentioned, you wouldn't typically want bottom reel seat as they won't go in most rod holders. If you're wanting to longline cranks, you'd probably want to step up to BnM PST's.

the micro lite rods have changed a little bit but BPS has them on sale reg $59.95 for $49.95 and the dipping rods 10' are on sale reg $54.99 for $44.95. they feel almost the same as what I have been useing B&M is a 2 piece but could use it for all 3 types of your fishing. the Micro Lite is ML 6ft 4 to 8 lb line 1/16to 1/4oz baits. IMHO only Your mileage may vary.

I recommend Southern Crappie Rods too. Tough and sensitive. Best I have owned!
