Default Strange words from Poverty Point...

Rode up from the camp yesterday afternoon and spoke to the man at the gate. Asked how the fishing was, and he replied, "Not so good, now that it has warmed up. This is a cold weather lake!" Not really what I was expecting, but he did spend a good bit of time telling me all about the layout of the lake, and he was extremely friendly...

178 views and not one more comment? Maybe I'm expecting an answer and not asking a question? I was figuring that warmer water would be the key to catching a few more fish, and maybe in thinner water, but I'm totally new to this game. Isn't that a fair assumption?

Well when you get a warm spell like this the shad that are gathered up in the deep creeks spread out back into the main lake taking the fish with them.

As far as thinner water goes I have caught fish on north end of lake during a warm up in mid January before so it is very possible that they are up there now.

When it is cold, the fish stack up in deeper water and as 20watt said, during the warmer periods, they tend to spread out all over the place!

Like said above, constant cold makes them stack up at near the same depth. For instance, they may all hang out at 25 feet in 30 feet of water. They go deep because the temperature down there is more stable. When it warms up the surface temp will be warmer than the deeper water, so they may still be in the 30 foot of water, but can be anywhere from the deep to all the way to the top and they are harder to catch because they aren't concentrated

You can catch them real shallow right now too because its warm in the shallows, but they arent spawning yet even though they have eggs. All the females will have eggs but it isn't time for them to be laid yet

OK, so it comes down to learning how to catch them deep. Like I said I am new to this, and have only caught them in the spring, so that's all I know about.

Just fish vertically (straight down) tight lining and go VERY SLOWLY! Try to find the drop offs to deeper water and you should do good there.

I don't think the slower bite has anything to do with the warmer weather. Water takes a lot longer to change temperature than the air and I don't think the water temp has changed that much in the last week. The slower bite probably has more to do with the unsettled weather, barometer, and finicky fish.
