    Smile Lake Atkins whopper !!

I was buying minnows at Bells Chapel Bait Store on the west side of Lake Atkins yesterday, and the owner of the store showed me a picture of a crappie that he weighed on certified scales at 4 pounds 2 oz. It was caught last week. He said another guy weighed in a 3 pound 8 and a 3 pound 6 oz on the same day about two weeks ago. The pic of the big one showed it was fat as could be, but the curious thing to me was that he said it was "nearly 15 inches long". That seems a little on the short side for a over 4 pound crappie to me. Since those scales he weighed it on are the ones he sells me minnows a half pound at a time on, should I be checking their accuracy ??

Any comments on a fish that weighs that much not being even 15 inches long ??

    Maybe D10 can comment.....

Think I'd find another Minner store. A 4 lb 15 in crappie would look like a nfl football.

Was it a white or black crappie? Either way it sounds short for the weight.

It was a white crappie, best I could tell from the picture. It was fat, but I have caught several 14 inch crappie that didn't weigh 2 pounds......when you really put them on the scale.

That is what I was thinking, Nimrod. It did look big and fat in the picture... maybe he was wrong about the length and correct about the weight. Seems strange that there would be that many giants come out of that little lake in a two week period with very few people fishing, but it was a big one for sure in that picture. DId not appear to be "photo shopped" at all.

Not one of my lakes but I have never seen a fish short of 15" be more than 3 pounds. I have worked up and measures and weighed close to 100 fish on a similar lake this year that were just shy of 16" and the heaviest was only 2.6 pounds. It was a few millimeters shy of 16".

I saw a picture of a 3.5 lbs Crappie that was caught on Lake Atkins..it was 17.5 inches long. Maybe not fat as the one you saw, but more in line with what I think a 3.5 lbs crappie should be.
