    Default Crappie Lures Color progression

How do you guys select what colors jigs you use. Do you have a set set of colors that you try when you initially go into the water? Do you throw what worked on your last trip? How often do you change your color when the bite is not on to find the preferred color for Crappie.
For example. Generally when I first hit the water I'm trying a white Malibu jig and a some color BG...then I progress from there; cycling through whatever colors feel good to me on that day. I usually will try up to four different colors before I throw in the towel. This has not been really all that successful for me so I'm scratching my head.

Note like most I have a few weired colors in my box that I have never tried.

I go by water clarity, and the sun. Clear water, bright. Dark water, dark. Sunny, bright. Cloudy, dark. Here on my lake there is about 5 deadly colors under docks, but come spring all bets are off when trolling. They may hit one color in the morning then something totally different in the evening, same with day to day. If trolling use different colors on your rods, and change them often, you will notice that one or two of the colors produce more fish, change all to those colors.

I have no science to what I start off with. Usually if I see someone snatching them in, one by one, I'll ask them what they're using. If I don't have it, I'll buy that color and fish it until the fish want something else. Right now, on Guntersville, BG Mayfly seems to be the hot bait. Other colors I have are Bluegrass, Monkey milk, and Blue Thunder. I've tried other colors with no success - pink, fluorescent green, plain white and purple. I suppose they will work sometimes, but if something's working - that's what I go with. AND, right now, a red-headed jig seems to be working well.

All depends on how I am fishing as (I mostly float and fly, shoot piers, or push jigs as in spider rigging) and I agree with Cowboy215 on picking colors. I use to keep several boxes and bags in my boat BUT now I only keep a handful of colors! Each year I end up with a favorite for the year, but its usually determined after I have ruled out several things! IMHO I worry more about correct depth and finding the correct presentation that triggers the bite for that day! I have fished with folks that would change color every ten minutes and miss a limit of fish because of overlooking presentation and depth! I do believe color is important at times but my rule that has made me more successful is to ..
1st Find and mark fish....if fish are not there...MOVE and find them!
2nd Determine the depth.......they can't bite what is not in their zone.
3rd Find presentation that triggers bite.....crappie are moody! This is most important to me....fast, slow, stop, twitch, and don't rule out size and weight of jig!
4th Is color....dont overthink it! Stay with confident colors! If you are on them, correct depth, and presentation is good....change colors if not catching!
5th Who is going to help me clean them? I hate cleaning a limit of fish almost as bad as I do leaving the lake when they biting!
An ungrateful man is like hog under a tree eating acorns, but never looking up to see where they come from!

When it comes to jig head colors I'm down to just a few colors any more: Chartreuse, Orange, Pink, Red and Black. (In that order of preference) I look at water clarity and sun/brightness to determine what I'm throwing. Like a lot of fishing advise, you asked a question that should get lots of answers on this one! Lol

I try to go with the clarity of the water and the conditions of the weather, much the same as "Cowboy215"
If you fish the same waters most of the time, it won't take you long to figure out what works!
