Hit the lake yesterday. Dad had to get his license renewed so we went to the State Park and saw this on the way back around 4 PM. 8 point buck swimming across where the little bridge is. Didn't see anything behind him. First time I've seen one swim in person.
Got to my aunts and bait was EVERYWHERE. I'm talking 1 cast 50-100 threadfin shad and a few 3-4" gizzards, and a couple 5-8" gizzards. All of the rough patches are hundreds of shad schooled on the top. They were as far as the eye can see, all the way to a couple feet of water.
Got rods setup and...nothing. They were already gorged on shad is all I can figure. Had a few half hearted bites, not the usual slams.
This little guy saved the big rod skunk...about 2.5-3 lbs. Not a single catfish.
Add a few bream on worms, a 7" crappie in the cast net in 3 feet of water, and hundreds of shad is the final tally.
Still a great trip. TONS of water birds...ducks, geese, herons, egrets, everything. Even a heron walking around my aunts yard at 9 PM doing who knows what.![]()

The catfish were really biting the crappie minnows near the bottom in 15 ft. In va i used chiavettas marinaded chicken for catfish and worked great, stumbled into it when i had no bait and threw out a bobber and went down in minutes. I think the scent draws them in. Really enjoy the photo of the striper.
