7th Annual Mp Methodist Church Tournament Results!
What a glorious day the Lord gave us! Lots of Son shine and we give Him all the honor and glory. Thanks so much to all the participants and sponsors for another great tournament. We had 22 boats that competed for over $2,550 in cash and prizes for 6th thru 10th. Lots and lots of fish caught but were on the small side. I guess Tillery has been fished hard and very few big fish are there anymore. We raised over $1,370 for a family who lost their 5 year old to cancer two weeks ago. Sorry we did not have the raffle this year. The church has ruled against raffles so I will think of something we can do next year.
Now who won?
1st - Ed Duke & Goob (Keith McManus) 7.59 - $1,000
2nd - Todd & Stephen 6.74 - $500 and 1st Big Fish 1.32 - $200
3rd - Doug & Chad 6.65 - $300
4th - Randy Pope & Wayne 6.65 - $200
5th - Benji & Herby 6.32 - $100
6th - Tom & Randy 6.10 - (2) 9ft Southern Crappie Rods with drop seat fly reels
7th - Leonard & Justin 5.67 - 14ft Southern Crappie Rod with Shimano reel
8th - Swag & Lee 5.40 - 14ft Southern Crappie Road (HEAVY) - 2nd Big Fish 1.30 - $100

Thanks guys we really appreciate all the crappie.com'ers that came. You are right Hunter when you fish this one you are up against the best. Having your name on the plaque is a great accomplishment. I think I failed to mention the parent/child winner was Leonard & Justin and the male/female winner was David & Phaneice. $50 to each of them.

I had the pleasure of attending the weigh-in of your tournament on Saturday and thought that the quality and quantity of fish that were caught were not as expected. One thing that bothered me was no effort was made to return any live fish back to the lake. The fish that were caught were probably the prime spawning stock and might help improve the lake population. I know a lot of crappie are caught and eaten (I eat my share),but it seemed all the crappie were kept by one or two people. I guess it is a throw back to my bass tournament fishing that some effort should be made to preserve the fish population, especially when top flight fisherman are catching quality fish and don't keep them for their consumption, should they not be returned to the lake???

Absolutely, the fish should be returned to the lake. As every participant signed in and received a copy of the rules, they were told face to face to practice catch and release today. They were asked to only bring 7 fish to the weigh in and try to release them back into the lake. I did not make it mandatory but did highly suggest we release all live fish. I personally caught 60-75 fish during the tournament and only brought 7 to the scales. The "one or two" that were keeping the fish were from our church. They cleaned the fish and gave them to our church members who greatly appreciate the meal they cannot afford and to the MP Food Ministry who feeds about 250 families per month in our community. As for the quality of the fish, this is a North Carolina Wildlife issue. The tournament followed all North Carolina Wildlife rules pertaining to crappie fishing. We had 22 boats, approximately 44 fishermen, approximately 264 rods, for 7 hours, and the best fish caught was a 1.36 but it died. This indicates the lake needs some attention to get the quality up. The problem with the quality is all the locals who are taking thousands every spring and never comply to any rules or regulations. I agree the fish kept on Saturday were some of best fish in the lake but do not compare to all the fish taken by the "outlaws" in the area. As far as quantity, we caught 60-75 lost count, so the quantity is there. The last time we were at High Rock the game wardens showed up at the weigh in and confiscated every fish weighed in and took them to an orphanage and prison. Yes the "top flight fishermen" can do more but I dare say it is the "top flight fishermen" that are hurting the lake. All the tournament fishermen I know almost never take fish from a lake, especially the big ones. I hope this helps you to understand what bothered you. I invite you to the weigh in of all our church tournaments and help return the fish to the lake. There is a CCA tournament Saturday, October 8th at the 24/27 landing and I'm sure you are more than welcome to that weigh in as well. Thanks for being a concerned fisherman we all can do our part to preserve the larger fish.

As most of you know I am the President and owner of CCA.I fished the church tour.Sat.and we caught close to 40 crappie.I personally know that those fish didn't go to someone that was going to do something with them that anyone would not approve.A good friend of mine took the majority and cleaned them, and he will give them to MP Food Ministry. If anyone has a problem with that then maybe you should get in these people's shoes and help out a little. The quality of the fish is that this lake was fished HARD from Dec. thru the spawn and a lot of fish were taken out and I mean quality fish. These tour. fishermen only take what they will eat.I myself am proud of Ronald for taking these fish and doing what is right for needy people that will really appreciate them.In my opinion most of the fish would have died as you noticed at the weigh-in several fish were dead already. The hotter than normal weather has had these fished stressed and most came from down river in deeper water and would probably have not survived. As most of the fishermen there only brought 7 fish back to the scales. This is my opinion and has no reflection on Leonard or MP Methodist Church.I hope people understand that tour. fishermen are not the ones that hurt the population of the fish.If we think the fish will survive we normally put them back, and thru years and years of fishing we have a pretty good idea.I spoke to several guys that said their were stressed badly. So with that said I think this was the BEST thing that could have happened, instead of rolling up dead on Sunday and not benefit someone in need.

I don't post on here much but Capp and Capps Cousin are all over it... I too fished the tournament and the condition the fish were in had nothing to do with the tournament director or any of the competitors. I think the best decision possible was exactly what was done, which is donating the fish to the needed as they most likely would not have survived if released. As far as quality of the fish... that's up the the NCDNR and the locals that keep more than their limit. The only way to ensure the healthiest population of any species is to follow the laws set forth and to offer feedback the DNR if things are not going well. Great tourney as always and look forward to next year, thanks to Capps Cousin and all his sponsors for putting on a first class event each year!!
