For me the hook size determines the length and type of material I use. I tie a lot of 1/80, 1/64, and 1/32 jigs. On the smaller jigs I use a smaller diameter material than I use on 1/16 and 1/8. The length of the body for me goes from the head back to the point of the hook or in some cases 1 wrap further back. It's a pretty subtle difference but it is all determined by the hook.

Welcome to the board and site!
Hook size should determin length of body. However chenille for the most part #2 for 1/32 and smaller, but if it's a New Age style which just means it has some Crystal in it, then one size larger can work on a 1/32 so I do use #3 a good bit on 1/32, but anything smaller should be #2.

Now #2 can be used from very small to 1/4oz head even just with a double wrap! For sure once I get to a 1/16 then I prefer the #3 for sure and if that is New Age style then a double wrap on 1/8 and larger!

On 1/32 I use #4, #6 & #8 hook size depending on what jig it is and what someone or my self wants!

Thanks guys. I have double wrapped with chenille before. Just starting to understand some of this hobby. I tie 3 or 4, then usually end up untying them and reuse the jig. Thanks again. May your wives go shopping and yo crappie be hungry....LP2.

There is really so much more than most think when they start this tying hobby! Some may never learn enough as they don't look at it all from all sides and yes even the fly tying side of things as there is so much more info that can be learned from these guys. The lessons on FAOL were so important to me, really the site was and even the language of tyers is something one should learn, but many don't. I feel the more time put in the more you get out especially from this hobby!

I usually use the hook to measure. I usually do one hook length (including the head) of hair starting from the bend in a sickle hook. That way it's always consistent and is the right size for me.
