I've had pretty good luck with shimano's fx1000's I bought six for spider rigging and for over a year all six have worked flawlessly. Used them trolling cranks as well and reeled in some nice 5-6 pound blue cats no problem. For less than $20 you can't beat them. I will say they arent as smooth as my pflueger president which I used for casting jigs but they aren't bad for the price and are tough.

I like a good used (10 year old) Stradic 1000 or 2000, the white ones with gold accents. You can find used ones that are mint for $65 if you check the internet fishing sites classifieds...Can't beat Shimano gears. or google used stradic 1000 for sale..

I use Ardent reels. I've got the new Krappie Kings 500 and 1000 series reels. I'm using them on my jig poles and my spider rigging poles. These reels are good reels and have a price tag of $40. I am not gentle on them and I'm not having any of the issues brought forth here with "grinding" or other noises.
Instead of returning that reel to Tackle Warehouse, why not contact Ardent directly and let them know about the issues? The only way a company can make a better product is to understand the issues faced with their products by their customers.

I was going to try a diawa 2000 series in one model or another until I looked up their weights and it was a no brainer to go with a president. Cheaper and much lighter. I am spoiled with light reels. I have a 30 series quantum smoke on one of my casting setups, absolutely awesome. Bought it for 60 bucks on ebay, don't find deals like that often. If light enough I am developing a preference for the larger body reels for crappie setups, much easier to pin the line against the cork when you don't have so much separation between the spool and the blank.
