This is the only day you have to fish."Work",Kid's health problem's.May not get a chance for another week or two maybe more.
As far as I'm concerned you answered your own question, we stay and fish irregardless of what luck others have. As was mentioned in an earlier post, just being on the water sometimes is enough.
I read a quote from another poster to this site and really liked it, "the two best times to fish is when its raining and when its not"

It is not about the catching , it is spending a day with family members or friends , the sights an sounds of the lake . trying different baits, lures , or areas you bypassed because everything you read says there are no fish there . I have learned from every time I get zero. So I enjoy the day and the fact I do not have to clean fish when I get home !

expect it to be slow , and if you know they usually catch them it should give you more confidence longer than normal .90% OF THE TIME GO SLOWER , SMALLER AND TIGHTER TO LEDGE OR BRUSH .

Usually I have some kind of pattern established from previous trips. So if that pattern does not work...then I just go try other things and other places.I go prospect fish areas looking for spots,I try a bunch of different presentations and lures, jig, bait. It keeps me busy and occupied,it gives me a chance to use a lot of stuff I would not have otherwise, and after a while I pretty much know the lake. Even if I find some new structure or some other fish holding feature and don't catch any that day...another day I will go back and try it again and maybe catch something.
I also eat a lot
Take naps
sightsee and watch wildlife
boat ride some
tinker with something on the boat
stop and talk to people sometimes
if it's warm I use to go swimming or wading,,,but I don't do that much anymore,I have been known to hang my feet in the water though while I fish
Sometimes stop at picnic areas and roast some weenies or cook something else
Sometimes catch catfish bait to take home to freeze
Then I go back and try my original pattern and it might have picked back up
If I lived on a good lake I would make a lot of short trips, especially if I was retired. As it is I fish about four places regular and they are all about a 90 to 130 mile round trip.So I don't go unless I am going to stay all day or about all day.I have only changed waters during the day a few times...it has paid off several times. If I go for a multi day trip somewhere I do pretty much the same thing.I will also switch target species if one is more active than another.

As far as the rainy days, my grandfather taught me a valuable fishing lesson. He said "boy, what you say we go fishi'in"? I said " but its raining today". Then he informed me that we could do it the way the indians used to do it and they caught lots of fish. He knew their secret. I said wow what is the secret??? The answer was "get wet and fish"

Plan my next trip, share information with others, ride around look for a good spot with your fish finder, laugh a little!

Like some of the other replies of above, fish good lures in as many areas as possible, as slow as possible.
IMO most fish we catch I will always assume are inactive but susceptible to being coaxed into biting an annoying object - our lure. The old saying, the longer the bait is in the water and the more areas fished, the more fish are exposed to it and bite it, is applicable any day of the year. Sometimes fish are in a hyperactive state, but those times of hyperactivity are far apart and few.
Granted, on some days caught fish may average smaller, but size isn't everything especially when time is of the essence (work or family responsibilities). I would rather catch over 30 fish on the small side, per outing, than a just few fish after giving up too soon and/or fishing the wrong lure, the wrong way and too few areas. Except for lightning and wind over 25 mph, I stay the course and outlast most anglers - especially those that have a litany of excuses why they haven't caught fish.
Use light line at different depths with light lures and the slowest and most effective presentation ups the chances of catching fish and isn't that what fishing is all about - putting the odds in your favor?!
This was one of those unexpected catches that amaze on a day less productive than
others.

6lb test, 1/32 oz jig and small plastic lure, caught this 5.5lb cat in 6', in the middle
of a cloudless day with water temp 84 degrees.
