Heading sensor ?

I added a heading sensor to my 859 at the bow of my boat. I turned on the GPS and made sure that the heading line didn't jump around in the location that I have it installed. It is currently sitting about and inch away from the cables running into the graph. When I took it out to the lake, everything seemed kosher until I started to move to a new spot while still sitting at the bow. My track line was way off from the heading line. I used the heading offset setting to correct the heading line to match the track line when navigating straight. It was something like 27 deg, 30 is the max offset and I was almost to the end of the slider.

My question is, does that indicate I need to move the heading sensor to the other side of the bow to keep it away from any interference? My heading doesn't jump around but it seems that it may be skewed to one side or the other. I have it in between the graph and the trolling motor which I like so it keeps my transducer right under my GPS location, but since I usually mark waypoints from the transom unit it really wouldn't be that big of a deal to have it 2.5 feet off considering I would still be sitting over top of my waypoint.

I used an old fashion compass to figure out where to mount my HS. Just put the compass where I wanted to mount the HS, and if it didn't still point to N I moved it. I think mine ended up being about 5" from the base of my Terrova. I didn't have to do the heading offset at all.

That is what I did Redge. I haven't put my Point one back on since I installed the auto transducer lift. I will no doubt have to look for another sweet spot for the Point 1, then re-calibrate.

You need to do the compass check with the trolling motor stowed AND deployed.

Stowed and deployed while on the water with the compass. Running the TM on land may create added RFI that is not present when deployed in water.

After you find the correct spot with the compass. Then make sure you have very little to no wind or current and complete the off-set per installation instructions. This will require you are moving at 4mph. If I remember correctly the installation instruction states it should be less than 10 off-set (with no wind or current) when installed correctly. If the compass test is OK. You may not have it aligned parallel with the centerline of your boat.

Note: When you are trolling or using your big motor with a crosswind or current, it is normal for the track line and heading line to not read the same. To go in a straight line your boat will have to be at an angle into the wind or current.

Correct to above Post. It is to be set (Off Set) at 4.5mph and should be within 5 degrees if installed correctly per Manual
