If you use DI not 2D 99% of the time I'm not sure why you would pay extra for chirp. Just my .02

Regardless of what brand you are looking at, you WANT to get CHIRP. It doesn't matter whether you are on DI, 2D, or basic sonar.

A normal sonar with a 83mhz/200mhz transducer will only send one signal down to the bottom at a time. IE, either 83, or 200 depending on your settings.

CHIRP sends multiple signals in different frequency ranges. A standard sonar will pickup baitfish as a ball whereas chirp will actually pick up individual baitfish. This is the difference between sending one frequency range pinging the bottom and miltiple diffrent signal ranges at the same time.

That is a really good article there in wired2fish, if you google search "sonar chirp" there is quite a bit more info out there as well like at Sonar Technology | CHIRP | Garmin from Garmin. The only exception is that Chirp really only applies to 2D Sonar from what I can find, if someone has any knowledge of this being different please enlighten me. I know Garmin makes the statement on there website "CHIRP technology also enhances the performance and clarity of Garmin DownVü and SideVü scanning sonar to provide the clearest sonar images on the water." So if that's true then I stand corrected however they say that but offer up "NO" pictures of any kind in their article which is continually utilizing picture to show how much better chirp is in 2D setting. I think the key word here is "enhances" as if to say it's another tool in your toolbox. But that's just my take on the information that I've been able to come up with.

Your commits on "only 2D" is what I was trying to say in my post above. I have not seen any data on chirp DI or SI. In my first post that was want info I was really looking for.

Those reds lines,in theffect first picture are crappie. This is a humminbird Onix,using stock transducer chirping 175-225 khz.The second picture is from,out in front of Barkley dam.I don't no what the fish are in the shot. I'm not sure if chirping di helps or not?Garmin should have the best chirping units tho.
