A Day to Remember, Anyone Else?

I am just wondering if anyone else was out fishing yesterday morning, and if so, were the fish on a feeding frenzy like they were on Houghton Lake? I spent six and a half hours on the water yesterday and averaged almost one fish per minute the entire time. Crappies and gills were nonstop, and the majority of them were pretty good fish. When I left the lake at 2:30, tired of catching fish for the first time in my life, I had landed 251 bluegills, 118 crappies, 13 largemouth bass, 2 rockbass, and one big walleye lost. It was definitely the best six and a half hours of panfishing I have ever experienced and am just wondering if it was statewide, or just a Houghton Lake thing as I saw a couple other posts elsewhere that sounded like similar action on other parts of Houghton Lake. I guess it's time for another fish fry at Franks.

Frank,

Me and the BugOfficer went out to a local 10 acre lake by our houses last night. In the morning (during the time you described in your post) our weather down here was totally different. When we fished in the evening, the weather was very similar to what you described. In fact, we had a storm front move in just East of us. For a period of time, the fish would not stop biting. You could flip your rod over the side of the boat, wash your hands, do whatever and the fish would hit. Heck, the jig didn't have to be 1 inch under water and they would hit it.

Good gracious. I only had a few trips like that in my life, but it was speckled trout ,redfish and flounder in the marshes of south La. Never in fresh water. I have caught a hundred or so a few times, but it has been a while. Congrats. This will be a home page article for sure. Frank, if you want, post more pics for the article.

I wish I had more photos of the day, but the the Micro SD Card adapter for my camera was at home in my laptop, so I wasn't able to take any photos on the lake. I guess if that is the only thing that went wrong that day, I'm ok with that.

That's cool Rich. I was really wondering. I caught a ton without casting. Just left 7 feet of line off the end of my rod and flipped it over the side, and then lift it right back up with a fish on it. I don't know how many specks I saw come right up next to my kayak to grab my jig as soon as it hit the water. For a while there I wasn't sure if I was actually on the water, or if I still at home and it was all just a dream. Hahahaha.

I had a MONTH similar to that in Sept. 2015. It started on Labor Day. We own a cottage on a steep hill overlooking a local lake (180 acres.) After everyone left the big family picnic I decided to troll for a while. As I approached the far end of the lake I saw a big flock of seagulls picking and pecking on the calm surface like chickens. As I got closer they flew off. THEN I saw lots of ripple rings from feeding fish! Having my ultralight and some Gulp worms I quickly cast to them. The little bobber hit the water and immediately got attacked by fish! Of course it disappeared and I set the hook on a nice bluegill. It was fast and furious non-stop action until I had 25 in the basket.
Wondering if that event was just unique, I returned the next morning. The gulls were gone, and lake was flat, and I could see groups of ripple rings in several places. In short order I was out and on them again. Same as the day before. A fish a minute....or less.
Now I told you that story so I can tell you this. My wife notified me that I fished those bluegills 27 days IN A ROW and 7 of those days were morning/evening double trips. I wish I has kept count of the total number I landed in that month. I've got a lot more years fishing than most fishermen have been alive (You too Frank.) and that month stands as the fastest action I have EVER had in my whole life.
Was it a once in a lifetime event? I doubt that. With Labor Day coming, I will be watching the surface of the lake with the hope that what happened last year will be repeated.
