Smaller cranks and even jigs work best with these. A crank larger than a 300 will pull the front snap out of the dive position which is at the top of the pyramid on the tadpole. When a fish hits the bait, they pull on the line and the front snap pulls forward on the tadpole to the position the picture shows so you don't fight the tadpole when you feel in the fish.
Check out how to use the tadpole here.

How long of a leader are you using between the tadpole and CB??
GO BIG ORANGE !
I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

FYI---Most of the time you won't need them when the fish are shallow in the column, but when they're Really Deep, they're killer especially using a planer. Makes it really easy to free spool the inside planers with the shorter line out so you can clear the outside board with a fish on it faster.
The Planer Board Shuffle with Tommy Skarlis- How to shuffle Off Shore planer boards - YouTube
One more showing how the short line out works with multiple boards. I can run 6 (3 on each side) by myself. It's work tho.

I shuffle my boards this way by myself. I don't reposition the rods until I've removed the board and caught the fish. I then move my other boards to the outside and reset my bait and board that just caught the fish to the inside position.
I free spool my inside boards, and I reset the spool after I've cleared the other boards with the fish just like the video shows. I just keep reeling after I reset the spools until I get the fish in the boat.
Oh yea, I do miss figure on occasion and cluster everything.![]()

A big crank will trip the tadpole. 300's work but that's about their limit. The short leader limits their ability to dive on their own just like pushing weights do. I would assume that the longer the leader, the more the crank would dive. I don't have enough experience with them yet to give you an amount of depth the cranks run below the Tadpole. Trial and error will take more time to figure it out.
The smaller baits or shallow runners don't dive much deeper that the tadpole, and I think these are the main reason for the invention of the Tadpole. The walleye guys pull crawler/spinner harness' and I have pulled jigs. Those type baits don't dive at all, and work perfect with them. Stick baits work really well as do lipless baits like Rattle Traps. The tadpole opens up an entirely different selection of baits that can be pulled productively for crappie. The Sky's the Limit with them for deeper fishing, or should I say "Controlled Depth" fishing. Even when long lining jigs, "You Know How Deep You're Fishing"!!!!!!!!!!
