These type of intermittent issues are commonly caused by low or insufficient power ...
Either a bad or low battery ...or using boat wiring for electronics (which is notoriously too small) ...

I have a one year old Lowrance HDS12 that has begun to freeze up a few times on every trip out. I have to shut off the electrical power to everything on the boat to reset it and get the screen up and moving and responding again. Anyone else experiencing this? Am I gonna have to send it back to Lowrance for repair? Thanks guys.

I have an HDS 12 and I am on my third one in a little over three years. My first GEN 2 was replaced for that problem. But I would first run the wiring straight to the cranking battery. I used 14 gauge marine wire fused at the battery. But yours sounds like a power problem to me like Rickie said. The lowrance people are good to work with if you have to go that route.

Thanks very much. I rewired to the battery last week and am taking the boat out today so maybe that will do it.
When I first got my hds gen 3 12's. I had the tendency to push the menu buttons to quickly and try to change from one thing to something else before the unit had time to recognize the previous comand and the unit froze up as you describe on several occasions ... Since I have got more familiar with the unit I don't give the unit a second comand before it had time to recognize the first on this seems to have solve my freeze up problem
Thanks Ljones. Fortunately (or not) I am so slow with technology that I am unlikely to encounter that problem! After rewiring the power to the unit the problem did not recur last time out ( and it helped us locate over 200 crappie that joined us for a quick stay in the boat!) so I am hoping that it was indeed a power related issue.
