I've been looking for a good bluegill lake in south central Illinois. I mean a lake with legit bluegill, I have been to mississippi and caught their hog headed gills but haven't found any outside of a pond around home lol. I really don't want to travel more than an hour so closer to home the better.

Apple Canyon Lake in Jo Daviess County. By far the best bluegill lake in the state. Only problem is you have to be a landowner and pay the dues. Then you have to put up with all the people that are out there that have no business owning a boat. I grew up with the lake, as it was built. One year, I went through 13 pounds of panfish leeches, catching those beasts. Bought my own lot in 2000 and sold it in 2009. Even with the the real estate crash, I made 4x what I paid for it. If I'd have resigned my position from the board of directors and sold it two years prior, I would have made 20x what I paid for it. Oh well, I had decades of great fishing, before I bought my own lot, and almost 10 years of ownership.

Ramsey Lake State Park- lots of eatin sized bluegill, not real big, 5-9 inches. The redear are really nice though up to 11 or 12 inches
Hillsboro City Lakes- Good size and plenty of them, but you'll need a sticker or day pass for your boat, plenty of good bank fishin though.
Lincoln Trail State Park- lots of them, and good size.
