    Default Spring Bayou report 6-4-16

Headed to the Red River to try an oxbow only to find the landing closed. Didn't want to just go home so we went to Spring Bayou. A tournament and the weather must have kept the boats away. Traffic was actually manageable.

The complex is like it's not been since the early 90s. In fact, there's even less grass now which is somewhat a problem for me. This time of year, my patterns involve deeper grass and lily fields. There's no grass other than the lake edges, and the pads are gone. Do grass carp eat lotus? Because of this, i cannot find the schools in the lakes.

Anyway, I found two bites. A grass edge in one lake, and a deep section of the man-made canal. Under cork with triple tailed grubs and tight lining with Itty-Bit Swimmers. Size was poor, with only one true slab. Caught enough to keep 16 that were easily filet sized. Caught fish the whole time with that cloud cover. No telling how many we threw back. No pics, but just picture 16 in a box with questionable size

I fished Spring Bayou in the late 60s and early 70s while in the Navy and on leave. My first introduction to spider rigging was during that time when I fished with an old Cajun member of my wife's family. We trolled the middle of the lakes and caught a bunch. I haven't fished there since but I sure have fond memories.

At least you got a few to eat. Congratulations! I talked to my neighbor yesterday afternoon. He had caught 31 nice crappieon the Red River somewhere around Natchitoches.
