    Default battery charging

I have a on board charger for my trolling motor batteries I plug in at night after using them each day. Sometimes it takes longer than overnight to charge them up fully. Instead of cutting into the fishing day waiting on it to charge completely can I hook another charger to them at the same time? If so how would I hook it up to do both batteries? The charger I have is not a real powerful one more of a maintainer. I just don't want to have to spend the money right now on a bigger charger. Thanks

Short draw, i dont think hooking up a maintainer type charger in addition would help you. Bigger charger, or smaller batteries. Ie drop from a 27 series to 24 series. you could always sell your current charger and put that money towards a bigger one. Check the for sale thread on this site, or bass boat central.com. Craigslist is another option.
Mac crappie, why dont you trust them? I was leary when i first mounted mine. Was checkin it all the time. Now i get home from fishin, plug it in, walk away. Check water level once a month. Havent had any problems.
    Drinkin coffee, missin fish.

Need more info. Are you straight 12 or 24? Is your on board a 2 bank or single bank? In certain situations you could make it work. Depends on your setup.

24v two bank charger just was curious as I have a portable charger didn't if that could be done just after long day of hard use the on board doesn't seem to get them charged up by early morning granted I don't have biggest one either. Didn't know much about them at the time I bought it. I've had no issues with it at all

Understand. Here is what I would try. Take both leads from your onboard charger and hook to one battery. Then hook the other charger to the other battery. You don't have to but I would suggest unhooking the jumper between the 2 batteries while charging just because. When you hook a charger to the positive and the negative it only see's 12 volt battery in your set up.

How many amps per bank? Less than 10 amps will take considerably longer to come to full charge.

I'm thinking it's like four amps per bank I realize I bought the wrong size but just was wondering if I could put a portable charger on it night when I'm at the lake if it would help speed things up. During the week it's no big just on weekends mainly was why I was asking...

Just bite the bullet and buy you a good portable that will charge about 12 amp or so. You always need one to throw on a tractor or car or whatever. I still prefer the old style that use a transformer and gauge over the total electronic chargers.

I have multiple boats and have had on an board on all of them...I have had a few go bad over the years and had the portable with me as back up. Also having a second charger gives you a second diagnostic tool to double check how the other charger is doing. Once in awhile when the onboard says its charged I will hook up the portable and see what it says...if they both say charged then I am confident I should be good. Sometimes I even carried a spare battery in the truck....I would leave it at the motel or cabin or camp where I was staying plugged in the portable. If I felt a battery was maybe not up to snuff I would change it out when I came in and swap with the one I had at camp on the charger....gave me so many options. How many guys you think I bailed out with that extra battery and charger??...wish I had a dollar for everytime.

I plug my portable on the battery with the other charger hooked up but not turned on and it does not hurt either charger. I do not think it will hurt to run both...but I have never tried that.

I sorta like this one http://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/NBC857512/NBC857512

Ps I have also been through several of the smart chargers some of them have been a little less than robust

I have been fishing a long time and have pretty much been through the evolution of a lot of this stuff. It's the same in the mechanical fields of electrical,HVAC,hydronics and stuff. I have been a maintenance and service tech for over forty years. Some stuff just is not that robust and errors are made in manufacturing and specification... and well...sh^# happens.

Backup.....has saved a lot more than a fishing trip
